Are you entitled to spousal or widow benefits?
Spousal and widow benefits for Medicare are available to spouses and surviving spouses of people who have worked and paid Medicare taxes. The amount of the benefit depends on the age of the spouse or surviving spouse and the amount of benefits the deceased worker was entitled to.
- Spousal benefits: A spouse can get Medicare Part A premium-free if the deceased worker had at least 40 quarters of Medicare-covered employment. The spouse can also get Part B and Part D benefits, but they will have to pay monthly premiums for those benefits. The amount of the spousal benefit is equal to 50% of the deceased worker's benefit amount.
- Widow or widower benefits: A widow or widower can get Medicare Part A premium-free if they are:
- 60 years of age or older
- caring for a child who is under 16 years of age
- disabled
A widow or widower can also get Part B and Part D benefits, but they will have to pay monthly premiums for those benefits. The amount of the widow or widower benefit is equal to 100% of the deceased worker's benefit amount if they are 60 years of age or older.
