Why should I care about the Annual Enrollment Period?
The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is the time each year when you can make changes to your Medicare coverage. This includes enrolling in a new plan, switching plans, or dropping coverage altogether. The AEP runs from October 15 to December 7 each year.
There are a few reasons why you should care about the AEP:
- You can make changes to your coverage without penalty. During the AEP, you can make changes to your Medicare coverage without having to pay a late enrollment penalty. This is not the case during other times of the year, such as during the General Enrollment Period (GEP).
- You have more plan options. During the AEP, you have access to all of the Medicare plans available in your area. This is not the case during the GEP, when you are only able to enroll in certain plans.
- You can compare plans side-by-side. During the AEP, you can use the Medicare Plan Finder tool to compare plans side-by-side. This can help you choose the plan that best meets your needs.
If you are thinking about making changes to your Medicare coverage, it is important to do so during the AEP. This will give you the most flexibility and ensure that you are getting the best possible coverage.
Here are some of the things you can do during the AEP:
- Enroll in Medicare for the first time.
- Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan.
- Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
- Add or drop a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.
- Change your Medicare Advantage plan's coverage options.
- Drop Medicare altogether.
