The Extra Help program, also known as the Part D Low-Income Subsidy (LIS), is a federal program that helps people with limited income and resources pay for their Medicare prescription drug coverage costs. It can help with:
- Monthly premiums: The program pays your Part D premium up to a state-specific benchmark amount.
- Deductibles: The program pays for your Part D deductible.
- Copayments and coinsurance: The program pays for most of your copayments and coinsurance for covered drugs.
To be eligible for Extra Help, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Be enrolled in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.
- Have income and resources below certain limits.
- You can apply for Extra Help online, by phone, or by mail. The Social Security Administration will determine if you are eligible and how much assistance you will receive.
